Rhyme Time

Friday, February 1st, 2008

We skipped going to Smith Memorial Playhouse this morning because I am coming down with a cold. I don’t think it is coincidental that this cold arrived shortly after our visit to daycare!

I needed to pick up some books at the library– they’ve been on hold for almost 2 weeks. Instead of walking the few blocks in the cold rain, I drove. Yes, I drove to the library. I felt silly, but I also felt dry.

Lilia likes to play with the children’s computers, and I usually try to turn them off and pretend they aren’t working, but today, I let her look at Stellaluna, which was sweet and sad, and now Lilia knows all about bats and mangoes.

Joe has been encouraging Lilia to rhyme. One of the activities in National Geographic Little Kidsis to complete a rhyme:

Open it up and take a look. It’s time to read your favorite…

(choices are… a paint palette, a soccer ball, and a book) and

Scarves and hats and coats and mittens. Winter clothes are as soft as…

(lemon? pinwheel? kittens!) However, Lilia always answers CATS, so Joe rearranged the rhyme so she gets it right… Scarves and coats and mittens and hats…

I asked the librarian for some suggestions for rhyming books. She said that about 90% of the books in the children’s section rhyme, but only about 10% are any good at it– often they try to cram in too much or try to make things rhyme that shouldn’t rhyme. We came home with three rhyming books:

Sheep in a Shop (Cute rhyme, pictures are cute, but a little busy);

Under My Hood I Have a Hat (cute pictures, easy rhyme, winter theme);

One Ted Falls out of Bed (okay pictures, counting theme, annoying rhyme…in what accent does dolls rhyme with trolls? Please? I can’t stand a non-rhyming rhyme!)

We also brought home Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert, who also wrote Snowballs– one of the books Melissa sent Lilia for Christmas.
Here’s a picture of Lilia and her Grampop reading it on Christmas day:

I was just on the IM with my dad, and he said he found a piece of paper that says he was born at 6:40 PM and was 8 pounds, 14 ounces!! HOLY COW!!! My nana was not even 5 feet tall. She was amazing. She also birthed my Uncle Nicky in an elevator…pretty sure it was the elevator at the hospital, because someone my mom worked with (a nursing supervisor) was in the elevator… So, if Nana could do it, I can do it! Of course, my dad was her what… 10th birth?

I’ve been really lazy today. I’m so itchy and uncomfortable. I’ve done nothing. No laundry, no exercising. Just eating. Maybe when Joe gets home we’ll go for a little icy walk– I hear it’s cold out there! I started to watch The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but I fell asleep during parts, and then turned it off. I saw it a looong time ago, and I read the book more than once I believe, but I can’t remember the plot anymore! I read at least 3 or 4 of those Milan Kundera books and they were all about Prague 1968 and all probably had love and sex in them, so they all blend together! I think I liked Laughable Loves the best, but I can’t be sure… I could re-read them. But I have pregnancy brain.

Joe is starting to tell Mr. Pinky’s story on his LJ. This cat was one of the most amazing cats ever. He just had the best story. The first installment is here. The other cats are bummed out. Thomas has been very needy– he needs cuddling. Blister has been mopey. Stripe at first was really affectionate– he knows he needs to comfort us if we are crying– but since has been kinda mopey too. And Boo is just an oddball… he probably thinks we took Pinky to be boarded– he was asleep through the whole thing.

Tomorrow, I think we are going to make it to Uncle Jorge’s surprise 70th Birthday party!! Unless this babe decides to make a move before then!!

Okay, I have to go get the icepack to put on all my itchies. Help!

My husband is biking home from work. Yes, he biked to work in a foot or more of snow and freezing temperatures.

You can read about his morning commute here. I hope this evening’s ride is much better.

Today is day one of not having anything to do, other than hatch this baby. No more job. I am pretty bored. I tried to read Ben and Me for One Book, One Philadelphia, but I actually don’t like it much. I’ve already read Ben Franklin’s Autobiography, and my brain power is not up for anything else. I haven’t read a book that wasn’t about pregnancy or babies since last summer! Yeah, for real!

Since I’m not walking to work, I did my 1 mile Walking DVD first thing this morning, so I didn’t feel so lazy the rest of the day. My little Ladybug is very comfy inside. I don’t think she’s making any plans to leave. Although she is very active in there, I think she’s just perfectly content.

If Joe makes it home safe and sound and not too bruised, he’ll be making another pizza tonight. Yummmy.

I predict more boring updates from me in the days, or maybe weeks to come.
